Berlin is growing and needs affordable housing. Adjoining the Kurt-Schumacher-Platz in Berlin-Reinickendorf, a new quarter will be developed after the closure of Tegel Airport - the Schumacher Quarter: with approximately 5,000 dwellings for some 10,000 people and associated facilities such as schools, child-care centres, sports facilities, shops and lots of green spaces.
The focus of Berlin TXL will be on the things that will keep alive the growing metropolitan centres of the 21st century: the efficient use of energy, sustainable building, environmentally-compatible mobility, recycling, the networked control of systems, clean water, and the use of new materials. The Schumacher Quarter, which will for the most part be erected by municipal housing companies, will provide new, affordable housing in Berlin. Intelligent planning, active energy generation and a modern mobility strategy will show the way towards a forward-looking, sustainable combination of living and working.
